Substance Abuse Prevention

Students are at greater risk for drug and alcohol use, delinquency, school dropout, and youth violent behaviors when the following factors are present:
  • availability of drugs in the community
  • extreme community deprivation
  • family history of serious behavior problems
  • severe family conflict
  • academic failure
  • lack of commitment to school
  • antisocial behavior
  • friends with drug abuse and other problems

Families can decrease this risk by:
  • strong bonding to family/school/community/peers
  • clear behavior boundaries
  • monitoring
  • meaningful youth activities
  • recognition for youth accomplishments
