Q. If I am an active substitute for TCSD, do I need to apply again next year?
No. If you are a current and active substitute you do not need to re-apply.
Q. If I'm currently a substitute for TCSD, but have been inactive for over a year, do I need to re-apply?
Yes, substitutes who have not been active for over a year are automatically separated from employment. You will need to re-apply and go through the Application and Hiring Process.
Q. If I am a retired teacher, do I need to interview and take the training in order to be a guest teacher?
Everyone must be interviewed and complete the FREE SubEssentials Introductory Course. The annual district SafeSchools training is required every school year. Tooele Valley guest teachers must take the SubSkills Training Course (optional for licensed teachers) and attend an Orientation.

Q. How long does the training take?
- SubEssentials: Approximately 90 minutes (Guest teachers only)
- STEDI Online Training: 8-10 hours (Guest Teachers only - Training Optional for currently licensed teachers)
- On-site Orientation: 5-8 hours depending on group size (Guest teachers only)
- Annual SafeSchools Video Training: 1-2 hours (All employees in the district - yearly requirement)
Q. How quickly can I begin working as a non-teacher substitute?
Once you are fingerprinted and submit completed paperwork, processing will take 1-5 business days. You will receive email notifications once cleared to work. You can begin working upon receiving these emails.

Q. How much will I make working as a guest teacher?
Once you are fingerprinted and submit completed paperwork, you will be expected to take the STEDI.org SubSkills training course and get a cumulative score of 85% on the assessments. Currently the SubSkills training is paid for by the district. Any additional training is at your own expense, but can lead to being placed on Preferred lists due to increased skill level. You will also be required to attend our Guest Teacher Orientation (Tooele, Grantsville and Tooele area only). Upon completion of all these pre-employment steps you will be eligible for hire and processed for employment activation. Once activated you can begin working as a guest teacher.
Wendover, Ibapah, Vernon and Dugway area guest teachers must get fingerprinted, submit completed paperwork and take the FREE SubEssentials Introductory Course before being able to work as a guest teacher. You will receive an email about this training once you have been offered a job.
Guest teachers are paid for (4) hours - half day or (7.5) hours - full day.
Q. How much will I make working as a non-teacher substitute?
High School Graduate: $70.00/day - 9.33/hour for (4) hours or (7.5) hours.
College Degree Associate or Bachelor: $80.00 per day - $10.67/hour for (4) hours or (7.5) hours.
Certified, Retired, Masters Degree: $90.00 per day - $12.00/hour
Wendover and Ibapah Area Guest Teachers: $14.00/hour for (4) hours or (7.5) hours.
Long-term Substitute: Assignments of over 40 consecutive days are paid at
$23.40/hour for (4) hours or (7.5) hours. On day 41 the increased pay takes affect retroactive to day one of the assignment. Long term assignments are paid
at a higher rate due to increased responsibility and requirements. Once
the long term assignment is completed, the guest teacher reverts back to
the standard pay rate schedule as shown above.
Bus Attendant Substitute: $9.33/hour
Q. How much can I expect to work as a substitute?
Bus Driver Substitute: $14.60/hour
Cook Substitute: $8.18/hour
Custodian Substitute: $8.18/hour
Secretary Substitute: $8.18/hour
All Tooele County substitutes are considered seasonal, on-call employees. There is no guarantee on how often a substitute will work. However, building relationships with administrators, managers, teachers and other staff, having a good work ethic and positive track record while on assignment leaves an impression which may result in being added to "Preferred" lists. Being on "Preferred" lists allows substitutes to see assignments more quickly which may result in increased work opportunities. A substitute may also get a personal request to sub.

Q. How will I know when an assignment is available?
Q. For what schools, grade levels and classes will I be expected to sub? How do I chose my assignments?
We utilize an absence management system called Aesop. When an employee is going to be absent they input their absence in Aesop. Aesop then calls available substitutes to see if they wish to work. Also, all substitutes get their own Aesop website where absences can be seen and substitutes can accept or decline the work. Aesop is also used to keep record of all absences worked by the substitute.
Q. If I am an existing guest teacher, can I sign up for any of the STEDI trainings?
Aesop has a function where substitutes can choose the schools where they wish to work. Any assignments within those schools will be posted on Aesop for the substitute to view and either accept or decline; therefore, the choice is left to the substitute.
Yes, you can sign up for online training at any time, but please be aware there may be a cost which is at your expense. If you decide to take the training, providing us a copy of your completion certificates may qualify you for our district preferred list.
Q. If I am a guest teacher and am later hired as a regular teacher, can I get reimbursed for training costs?
No. Even if you later become a regular teacher you will not be reimbursed for the substitute training costs. Consider this Professional Development for your new job.
